Using Internal Family Systems for Therapist Self-Care

Presented by Daphne Fatter, PhD on 04-19-2022 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented extraordinary demands on mental health providers. This has created a perfect storm for therapist burnout, vicarious trauma, and countertransference reactions. Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Richard Schwartz, PhD, is a non-pathologizing, evidenced-based approach to psychotherapy that can be used by therapists to support self-care.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Fatter will review the basic model of IFS, its theoretical assumptions, its view of the therapeutic relationship, and the goals for IFS treatment. Dr. Fatter will apply an IFS framework to invite therapists to work with our own parts to explore the three types of parts in IFS. This webinar will include case examples of therapists’ inner systems to describe the process of applying IFS to our own systems for self-care. Dr. Fatter will guide several experiential exercises to demonstrate one of the most important first steps in the IFS model. Guided experientials will invite clinicians to have increased awareness of their own “helper” and “therapist” parts for our own self-care and burnout prevention.

This introductory web conference will help mental health clinicians:

  1. Describe assumptions of Internal Family Systems (IFS) theory.
  2. Report the view of the therapeutic relationship according to IFS.
  3. Explain how to use IFS for therapist self-care.
  4. Examine one's own parts through an experiential exercise to familiarize oneself with the IFS model.
  5. Identify one's own “helper” parts and what they need for self-care via applying IFS techniques to one's own internal system.

Statement of program material’s accuracy, utility, and risks: The content of this webinar is accurate and up to date with industry standards. Its utility is very relevant and applicable for all clinicians. There are no known risks of the course content presented other than participants may increase their self-awareness of their own “parts” which may be activating.

Declaration of any conflict of interest: None indicated.
