Using Deliberate Practice to Enhance Clinical Skill Development

Presented by Tony Rousmaniere, PsyD on 08-25-2017 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

How do the good become great? Practice! From musicians to athletes to surgeons to chess masters, professionals rely on deliberate practice to achieve expertise. Deliberate practice is a process involving an ongoing and dedicated training with personalized skill-building exercises informed by expert feedback. In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Tony Rousmaniere will explain how to use deliberate practice to enhance clinical skill development.

Dr. Rousmaniere will outline how attendees can integrate deliberate practice into clinical supervision and training to help them grow past their competency plateau. He will also explain how therapists can benefit from the science of expertise that utilizes a field of research focusing on the processes used to achieve expertise by other professionals across a broad range of careers. Attendees will learn how Dr. Rousmaniere found his own success in the use of deliberate practice to help him become a more effective therapist and clinical supervisor.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe four processes in deliberate practice.
  2. Describe a model for using deliberate practice for clinical training.
  3. List three challenges to engaging in deliberate practice.
  4. Identify three strategies to sustain deliberate practice.
  5. Describe one method to examine the effectiveness of deliberate practice.
