Transference occurs when a client projects the unconscious feelings, desires, and expectations of one person are redirected and applied to a therapist. Countertransference occurs when a therapist transfers emotions to a person in therapy, often a reaction to the client’s own transference. Both are harmful to the client’s progress and will limit their success in the future should they not be properly addressed.

Avoiding countertransference is possible when a therapist knows how to set healthy boundaries and practice mindfulness when working with clients exhibiting these symptoms. Not all examples of this are a problem, though, as using it consciously can help make important clarifications in the client’s experience versus how you are understanding their situation as their therapist.

Transference involves the client interacting and treating their therapists as though they are another existing person in their life and is often exemplary of a relationship from their childhood such as a parent or guardian. Most often, the client is not knowingly doing this, but when a therapist understands when it is occurring, they are more capable of understanding the person's current condition or details leading up to the present.

GoodTherapy offers continuing education for therapists on transference/countertransference. These continuing education courses include topics like how to establish healthy boundaries, countertransference issues in trauma therapy, transference/countertransference in the counseling environment, and more. Depending on the state you currently practice in, continuing education courses may be necessary to meet licensing requirements.

By participating in continuing education courses on transference and countertransference, providers can broaden their knowledge and skill set, giving them tools that help them effectively address relevant situations.
