Solution-focused counseling is a comprehensive model that emphasizes clients' resources, strengths, and effective coping skills to bring about positive change. If these resources—called exceptions—are identified and amplified, then problem resolution can be brought about in an effective and efficient manner. Solution-focused counseling holds that clinical realities are co-created in therapeutic conversations. In addition, Dr. Guterman will provide an overview of solution-focused techniques that use exception questions, scaling, and structured tasks as well as their clinical applications. He will also describe a variety of clinical applications for solution-focused counseling.
Solution-focused counseling follows a strategic approach to eclecticism that allows for the compatible and effective application of theories and techniques from other therapeutic approaches. Dr. Guterman will provide insight into this modality that emphasizes how the diverse worldviews and experiences of individuals in therapy inform, influence, and impact problems, goals, and the treatment process.
