Suicide-Contagion in Teens: Five Things Clinicians May Miss

As a society, we have gotten better at addressing the topic of suicide. However, it remains taboo in some communities. When we do talk about it, we tend to leave out the seemingly hidden challenges teens face when they begin to think about suicide. Adolescents of color, who face special challenges in this area, tend to be overlooked as well.
In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Támara Hill will discuss the difficulties individuals and communities face when suicide-contagion becomes a concern. She will also describe the issues facing teens of many cultures who are struggling with this rarely recognized epidemic.
This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:
- Summarize the definition of suicide-contagion.
- List the five things regarding sucide-contagion adults and professionals tend to miss among teen groups.
- Discuss the history of suicide-contagion and how it relates to modern-day teens.
- Describe how the history of suicide-contagion explains the fads and popular prevailing teen theories that may influence suicidal behavior.
- Utilize concepts of suicide-contagion prevention in their personal and professional lives.
Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: References utilized in this powerpoint will be added to the end and are retrieved from PubMed, current books, and articles from the American Counseling Association and American Psychological Association. The limitations of the content presented in this presentation may revolve around a lack of modern references on the phenomenon of suicide-contagion. The presenter will add information on how to be HIPAA compliant and maintain professional practice including ways to reach out to teachers, parents, and caregivers. As laws differ by state, mental health providers may need to do further research based on their laws and state ethics code.

Támara Hill, MS, NCC, CCTP, LPC
Támara Hill, MS, NCC, CCTP, LPC, is a licensed therapist and certified trauma professional in private practice. Támara specializes in working with children and adolescents who suffer from mood disorders, trauma, and disruptive behavioral disorders. She also provides international consultations and works with some young and older adults struggling with grief and loss or life transitions.
Támara strives to help clients to realize and actualize their strengths in their home environments and in their relationships within the community. She credits her career passion to a “divine calling” and is internationally recognized for corresponding literary works as well as appearances on radio and other media platforms. She is an author, family consultant, Keynote speaker, and founder of Anchored Child & Family Counseling.
