Preventing Child Sexual Abuse in Communities: Skills for Therapists

Presented by Martha Tumblin, MEd, LISW-CP on 05-17-2019 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

It takes a village to protect a child. Child sexual abuse may be the most prevalent health problem children face, with an extremely serious array of consequences. As many as 1 in 10 children will experience contact sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.

This means that whether someone is an adult who works with youth, a parent, a relative, or another community member, it is highly likely they know or care for someone who has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse unfortunately often happens whether communities are prepared or not. The good news is it can be prevented, and therapists can play a role in prevention.

In this 2 hour continuing education web conference, Martha Tumblin, MEd, LISW-CP will explain skills adults can bring into their communities to change the sociocultural norms that enable children to be abused.

Martha will discuss Darkness To Light’s 5 Steps to Protecting Our Children, which outlines how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, as well as outline strategies from Darkness To Light's evidence-informed Stewards Of Children training curriculum. She will also cover material from Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth Serving Organizations, published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). These resources all inform the therapist’s role in primary prevention.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recite statistics about the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse.
  2. Recognize at-risk situations where children may be abused.
  3. Apply corrective measures to minimize risks for abuse.
  4. List gold standard recommendations for employee screening.
  5. Summarize ways they can get more involved in child sexual abuse prevention initiative.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: The information presented in this program is derived from the research studies referenced in Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training workbook and The Center for Disease Control’s publication, Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth Serving Organizations.

Declaration of conflicts of interest and commercial support: None
