Navigating the Abyss: Accessing Effective Addiction Treatment

Presented by Lori Ryland, PhD, LP, CAADC, CCS, BCBA-D on 12-11-2020 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Addictive disorders affect the lives of millions of Americans today. Despite the prevalence and pervasive toll addiction can take on the lives of individuals and their families, there continues to be a large treatment gap in the United States.

In this 2-hour web conference, Dr. Lori Ryland will outline what mental health professionals need to know about accessing effective addiction treatment. Dr. Ryland will review how addiction affects the brain, how stage of change and motivation affect prognosis, and how to maximize treatment using stage-matched interventions. Several of the behavior therapies used in other behavioral disorders have been demonstrated to be effective for addiction treatment including Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing/Motivational Enhancement Therapy. Medication-Assisted Treatment has also been demonstrated to be safe, cost-effective, reduce the risk of overdose, and improve several areas of functioning. Selecting appropriate treatment based upon individual assessment and working with payers to report and document medical necessity and least restrictive environment is a key role in navigating effective addiction treatment.

This introductory web conference is designed to help mental health clinicians:

  1. Describe the prevalence of addictive disorders in the United States.
  2. Explain what happens to the brain when substance use occurs.
  3. Outline the Stages of Change Model for addiction treatment.
  4. List at least three implications for the treatment of addictive disorders.
  5. Identify examples of evidence-based treatment models for addictive disorders in addition to the types of conditions each practice can benefit.
  6. Describe American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria in determining levels of care and description of what type of treatment occurs at each level.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: This program presents an overview of addiction principles, researched and published behavior therapies, and guidelines for patient placement published by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. It is consistent with the ethics code of the American Psychological Association and has its own established code of ethics as developed by the Association of Comprehensive Psychology, an approved CE Sponsor of the APA. Statements about approval or denial of services are according to presenter’s understanding of medical necessity and clinical documentation standards at the time of the program. This program discusses strategies for applying the methods taught in a clinically responsible manner, although the presenter may not know how to apply all principles discussed to every situation or person. A body of research surveyed in the program suggests that the methods are effective and safe. As always, however, misapplication of psychotherapeutic interventions with mentally vulnerable populations can lead to harmful outcomes.
