Understanding the High Sensation Seeking Personality

Presented by Kenneth Carter, PhD, ABPP on 09-18-2015 at 9 a.m. Pacific to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Sensation seeking is a trait we all have. It includes the search for complex and new experiences. People with high sensation seeking (HSS) personalities crave exotic and intense experiences even when physical or social risks are involved. Addictions, dangerous driving, and relationship dissatisfaction have all been linked to overly high sensation seeking tendencies. In addition, HSS can interact with psychological conditions.

Dr. Kenneth Carter, a respected authority on sensation seeking, will introduce strategies to identify unhealthy HSS in your clients and discuss the psychology and neuroscience behind this concept. This web conference will review the habits, hobbies, and hardships of those who want to squeeze every drop out of life. We will cover aggressive driving, unhealthy sexual relationships, addictions, and other propensities of the high sensation seeking personality. We will also review how to discuss high sensation seeking with your client.

This two-hour web conference is designed to equip you with valuable knowledge and application strategies that you can use immediately in your practice.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the components of the high sensation seeking personality.
  2. Analyze some common habits and hobbies of high sensation seeking clients.
  3. Differentiate between healthy and unhealthy sensation seeking.
  4. Distinguish high sensation seeking from other traits.
  5. Explain the biological and environmental contributions to high sensation seeking.
  6. Articulate ways to discuss problematic high sensation seeking behaviors with clients.
