My Approach to Helping
Hello! My name is Heather. If you are reading this you have taken the courageous step to reach out for support. I want to acknowledge your courage because I know what it is like to contact a counselor having walked my own healing journey. I believe integrity is vital to the client-counselor relationship and the counseling process. Therefore, I do not believe in encouraging a client to go where I am not willing to go myself.
I started my counseling profession as a young child in my family system. Counseling others and mediating conflict was just something I naturally did. At the time, I did not realize it was an actual career. So, for me, I see being a counselor as more of a calling than a career. In my early twenties, I went overseas to teach English in Cambodia for two years. During this time, I continued to find myself in the role of a counselor. As such, I decided to return to the United States to pursue my studies.
My path of education in the field was one less traveled. After returning to the United States, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family. I returned to Cambodia to work 5.5 more years providing counseling services to English-speaking expatriates and Khmer nationals having previously learned the language and culture. I later decided to pursue a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling. I completed my post-graduate hours for licensure in Texas while working with juveniles on probation and in a pre-adjudication and post-adjudication government facility. I am grateful for the path I took because it was full of valuable, real-life, on-the-ground experience coupled with the " book knowledge." I have had the privilege of working cross-culturally with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and beliefs.
I am just one person on a client's life journey for a season. I would love the privilege to work with you if you feel I am the right fit. But, beyond that, my hope is that you will find the support you need as you continue to take courageous steps toward personal growth and change.
