"Tapping" into Energy Psychology: A Rapid Mind-Body Approach to Healing Trauma

Presented by Robert Schwarz, PsyD, DCEP on 03-02-2018 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

As a clinician, do you wish you could do more than just talk to individuals in therapy who are traumatized? When individuals in therapy are immobilized by trauma or overwhelming affect, do you have tools to help them reduce or resolve the problem in a matter of minutes? Are you calm and confident in working with intense traumatic memories, knowing you can keep someone safe while helping resolve the pain from the memory? Incorporating Energy Psychology or “tapping” can help clinicians answer these questions affirmatively and contribute to an increase in successful treatment outcomes.

Energy Psychology (EP) techniques are evidenced-based, brief approaches that are easy to learn, safe, and non-abreactive. Outcome research supports the effectiveness of acupoint tapping techniques that can be used to address a wide range of traumas, from bullying to violent sexual assault. EP has also been used to successfully treat posttraumatic stress disorder in veterans and the survivors of genocide in Rwanda.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Robert Schwarz will explain EP and why its techniques are valuable to a trauma-informed approach to treatment. Dr. Schwarz will present a summary of the research from approximately 100 published studies on “tapping” therapies, including Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT), that support EP as evidenced-based for treating trauma, anxiety and depression. He will also discuss how interpersonal neurobiology and Polyvagal Theory also support the use of EP.

Dr. Schwarz will also present basic instruction in EFT and how attendees can integrate these approaches into their counseling practice to remove the traumatic energy and emotions from traumatic events. Attendees will learn why “tapping” therapies facilitate insight, increase mindfulness, and foster posttraumatic growth. Dr. Schwarz will also cover selected ethical issues and some of the limitations of EP.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Explain at least one way EP can be integrated with Interpersonal Neurobiology.
  2. Summarize how to break a traumatic event into treatable components to use EFT.
  3. Delineate how to utilize EP within the tri-phasic model of trauma treatment.
  4. List the four basic steps of emotional freedom techniques.
  5. Describe at least three pieces of outcome research that supports the effectiveness of acupoint tapping techniques.
