Couples and Infidelity: Navigating a Manageable Crisis in Therapy

Presented by Raffi Bilek, LCSW-C on 02-19-2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to noon Pacific (3 p.m. Eastern)

Infidelity is often thought of as a dealbreaker for marriages. A Gallup poll revealed that 62% of partners say they would leave a spouse who was cheating. The reality, however, is that infidelity does not have to mean the end of a relationship–about 70% of couples end up staying together after an affair is discovered.

Nor is infidelity the most difficult relationship problem to treat, contrary to what many mental health clinicians may believe. Couples facing the upheaval of infidelity in their relationship come to couples therapy with as varied a presentation as with any other problem–some couples furious and yelling, some cold and disconnected, some apparently serene and objective. Wherever the couple is starting from, a good understanding of the roadmap for helping them heal from infidelity can ground the therapist and help them guide the couple through the process of healing.

In this 3-hour continuing education webinar, Raffi Bilek, LCSW-C will lay out effective therapeutic steps for working with couples dealing with an affair and provide useful perspectives on the process, as well as specific techniques to move through it. Empathic dialogue will serve as a foundational tool for helping couples through this difficult time in their relationship and lives. In addition to providing practical clinical tools, the goal of this webinar is to increase therapist confidence in working with couples presenting with infidelity.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Identify the impact of one's own values and experiences on one's treatment of infidelity.
  2. Describe a five-stage therapeutic approach to helping couples facing infidelity.
  3. List common needs of both partners in the wake of infidelity.
  4. Explain four needs and four challenges of both partners in a couple experiencing infidelity.
  5. Summarize the current infidelity statistics in the U.S. according to current research.
