Helping Clients in Recovery Achieve Emotional Sobriety

Presented by Allen Berger, PhD on 07-12-2019 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Emotional sobriety has begun to take its rightful place in the treatment of addiction. Simply stated, emotional sobriety is the ability to be a determining force in one's life. This involves taking 100% responsibility for creating one's own experience. Self-regulation is an important part of emotional sobriety.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Allen Berger, PhD will discuss the concept of emotional sobriety from the work of Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Berger will also discuss how emotional sobriety relates to a much larger perspective in psychotherapy and how clinicians can help clients achieve this state of mind.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Summarize the definition of emotional sobriety and its elements.
  2. Describe two ways that emotional dependency interferes with emotional sobriety.
  3. Apply two interventions to help a client recover their emotional center of gravity.
  4. Summarize two of the columns of the Emotional Sobriety Inventory Form.
  5. List two ways that Chair Work can facilitate a client's awareness of their emotional dependency.
