CBT Assessment, Conceptualization, and Treatment of DSM-5 Personality Disorders

Presented by Jon Sperry, PhD, LMHC, LCSW, NCC on 09-29-2020 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Mental health practitioners regularly encounter clients with personality disorders. Some 50 percent of those evaluated in clinical settings meet criteria for a personality disorder, as do 10 percent of the general public. These disorders can greatly disrupt an individual’s work, family, and social relationships. Personality disorders are associated with higher rates of family conflict, separation, divorce, child custody proceedings, job termination, homelessness, substance abuse, violence, and criminal behavior. Such disorders can complicate co-occurring medical conditions, as well as the prognosis of other mental health conditions. Personality disorders are associated with poor treatment compliance, increased use of medical and psychiatric services, and the likelihood of relapse and premature termination. Treating individuals with these disorders can be extraordinarily challenging, and sometimes exasperating, for mental health practitioners.

In this 2-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Jon Sperry will discuss cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) assessment, conceptualization, and treatment of various Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) personality disorders, including borderline personality and narcissistic personality. Dr. Sperry will highlight a CBT functional assessment model and also empirically-validated CBT strategies to use with this population. He will introduce participants to each step of the CBT process, from assessment to case conceptualization to selection and implementation of various interventions.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) assessment process and discuss how it informs CBT conceptualization.
  2. Describe CBT conceptualization and understand how it informs CBT intervention planning.
  3. Apply five CBT strategies to treatment individuals diagnosed with various personality disorders.
  4. Discuss the fundamentals of a CBT functional assessment.
  5. List two ways that CBT can help individuals with personality disorders improve their overall social and emotional functioning.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: The contents of this program are based primarily on research done over the past 30 years by which CBT strategies have been used and validated among individuals diagnosed with personality disorders. Course references will be provided to participants.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: None.
