My Approach to Helping

I want you to live a full and meaningful life. Therapy can be a tremendous help. Therapeutic process provides opportunities for healing changes, stirs confidence and expectancy, and catalyzes positive new experiences.

More Info About My Practice

Please do not contact me to request that I provide therapy services. I have not provided direct clinical services for several years. I am in an executive leadership position. I do also write and consult professionally.

My writing has been published in MGMA Connection, Family Therapy Magazine, Therapy Today, Context, Self & Society Journal, Voices Journal, Hermeneutic Circular, the Irish Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy, Inside Out: The Irish Journal of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, the newspaper Wenatchee World, as well as the Seattle Times. I also write for PsychologyToday.com, GoodTherapy.org, and Psychotherapy.net.

I authored a chapter, “The Empathor’s New Clothes: When Person-Centered Practices and Evidence-Based Claims Collide,” in the book Re-visioning Person-Centred Therapy (2018, Routledge Taylor & Francis Group), contributed to a chapter in the book A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility: How Clinicians Can Work More Effectively in a Diverse World (2020, Routledge-Taylor & Francis Group), and authored the Children’s Behavioral Health Integration and Value Transformation Toolkit (2018, Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics-Pediatric Transforming Clinical Practices Initiative).

How Psychotherapy Can Help

Rollo May, a famous psychotherapist, once wrote that "the purpose of psychotherapy is to set people free" (Freedom & Destiny, 1981). In the best of cases, therapy helps people confront problems, the beliefs and dynamics that maintain their power, the attachments and distractions that are preventing wholeness and vitality, teaching clients new and creative ways to face and work through their problems, and, in many cases, revising destructive and debilitating beliefs about problems, about themselves, about their relationships, or about their world. Therapy is a process that stirs will and vulnerability and provides opportunities for revelation and constructive change.

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

Painful feelings can stir in us confusion, questions, fears, resentments, or defensiveness; they often lead to impulsive, aggressive, or isolating beliefs and behaviors. As a therapist, it is my role to facilitate opportunities for working through painful feelings without being overwhelmed. When clients do become overwhelmed, it is my responsibility to slow things down, help clients face their pain, and assist clients in laying new foundations and building new structures. Therapy is intended to provide confrontation alongside nurture and affirmation so that clients continue moving forward in a journey of problem-solving and personal maturity.
