Addressing and Managing Chronic Pain: An Evidence-Based Approach

Presented by Martha Teater, MA, LMFT, LPC, LCAS on 05-04-2018 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting more than three months. A third of Americans experience chronic pain, and many of them have been prescribed opioid medications. In the midst of the current opioid epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released new recommendations for nonpharmacologic therapies for treating chronic pain, including mental health counseling involving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Martha Teater, MA, LMFT, LPC, LCAS will discuss evidence-based approaches for addressing and managing chronic pain with individuals in therapy. Martha will emphasize the effectiveness of CBT in helping people modify their thoughts about their pain. She will also cover CBT tools tailored for managing chronic pain including the ABC model, thought distortions, decatastrophizing, and automatic negative thoughts worksheets.

Martha will describe and demonstrate mindfulness practices that can be used to reduce reactivity in those with chronic pain. She will share strategies for helping individuals develop a mindful approach to their chronic pain that may allow them to be less reactive, calmer, and more accepting. Martha will also share case examples with other therapeutic interventions that have helped people move out of chronic pain.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Recognize chronic pain and its emotional aspects.
  2. Describe the chronic pain cycle.
  3. Summarize the physical and emotional risks of opioid medications.
  4. Apply effective components of the cognitive-behavioral treatment of chronic pain.
  5. Demonstrate mindfulness techniques for managing chronic pain.
